  1. 1

    Flight time

The hours flown with you on board, at the aircraft’s hourly rate. Midsize jets typically run $4,500–7,000 an hour.

  2. 2

    Repositioning

Getting the aircraft to you and, on a one-way, often back to its base. The biggest variable on most quotes; an aircraft already heading your way can remove it.

  3. 3

    Airport charges

Landing, handling and parking at both ends. Busy airports and peak days cost more.

  4. 4

    Optional extras

Catering and Wi-Fi are your choice. They belong on their own lines, never folded into the hourly rate.

  5. 5

    Federal excise tax

7.5% on domestic US charter. If a quote doesn’t show it, ask whether it is included.

  6. 6

    Segment fees

A small charge per passenger for each leg, about $5 and indexed yearly.

  7. Σ

    The all-in total

What you pay if the trip stays as requested. Changes you make, or charges no one can know ahead such as winter de-icing, are billed under the charter agreement.

Beyond the numbers

What else a complete quote tells you.

The aircraft

Type, and usually year and seating layout, so you can compare like with like.

The operator

Named before you book, with the safety audits it holds.

How long the price holds

Validity can be days in a quiet week and hours in a holiday one.

What happens if plans change

Payment, change and cancellation terms come from the charter agreement.

Quote decoder

Type in your own quote.

Enter the amounts from any charter quote, ours or anyone else’s. The decoder totals them, checks the excise tax and segment fees, and flags lines that are missing or worth a question. What you type stays in your browser.

Your total

$34,430

Total of the lines entered

The decoder starts with the example above filled in. Typical figures are general guidance for US charter, not advice on a specific quote.
